INVERTEBRAILLE # 1

I turned in my pod

and grew

downwards

into

the vast firmness

of the ground

darkened

by the density of a thousand years

and nursed a pulse

as steady

as an unheard heart

beating in the midst of a river

and curled up in languid roots

unknown

to the very trees

they had spurred into existence

crumpled alphabets

for the defiantly silent

hands

either stretching into the abyss

or lovingly

holding on to it

shadows

not knowing

that they are shadows

the only

answer

a low rustling

like the sound of coal shifting about

in a marvellously forgotten cellar

See

there are

miracles on display

there are cigar store indians

doing slapstick routines
on
a broken page of history

cracking up somewhere
inbetween
himmler and marconi

not worrying about origins
time
or how much a drink costs
or
what comes after

the laughter dies out
